I am from Coimbra, Portugal, and am currently teaching in a school in Soure, about 30 km away from Coimbra. I have been a teacher of English for over 20 years and have already taught different levels and age groups. After all this time I can say I love working with adult groups because there are no coursebooks and I can create my own resources. I am an avid reader, a blogger and very curious about free tools and their implementation in the classroom.

World Carfree Day - 22nd September

Every September 22 is World Carfree Day.
In a car-dominated society, another eco-friendly initiative to make us all think about what we are doing to our planet...As for politicians / governments, well, it should really be a time to plan our cities differently and give priority to cycling, walking and better public transport!!!

I know, I know it's hard to avoid driving our cars to go to work or to take our children to school but at least, let's stop for a while and think about this - seriously! What do I do to avoid driving? What do I do to prevent more pollution? What do I do today or could do to improve my/our kids' future on Earth???

In Italy, one of the measures often taken to reduce the level of carbon dioxide and other harmful gas is to forbide the use of cars, at least in the historical centre. Another anti-pollution measure is " plates alternate" that is to say, on days with an even date, only cars whose numberplate ends in an even number may be on the road, while on days with an odd date, only cars whose numberplate ends in an odd number are allowed to be on the road. It's better than nothing but then, as soon as the situation improves, we return to "normal" life. It is the mentality that should revolutionize, so as to create permanent changes in our dailylife.

I agree with you - people have to change mentalities first of all! Governments can legislate but there are always ways to escape by finding flaws... as for myself, as a mother and teacher, the crusade doesn't stop :)
