Another year, another theatre play by INTERACTING and another stunning success!
Laugh while you learn is their motto and couldn't really be more appropriate. Indeed, it's already the fourth time / year they have come to Soure to delight us - teachers and students of Martinho Árias - with a funny and educational theatre play and let me tell you that, this time, there were ONLY 210 students and seven teachers. What about that, hem?
This year's play - as the title suggests - had to do with Charles Dickens (1812-1870), the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and one of the most popular of all time. Charles Dickens published over a dozen major novels, a large number of short stories (including a number of Christmas-themed stories), a handful of plays, and several non-fiction books. Some of his most popular novels are "The Adventures of Oliver Twist", "A Christmas Carol", "David Copperfield", "Hard Times", "A Tale of Two Cities", "Great Expectations" to name just the most famous ones. And what did the two actors on stage do? They used many of the characters to play different roles and to ask for your participation ;)
Also important when talking about Charles Dickens is, of course, Dickens London - the time of the industrial revolution - when it was both a city of change and of stark contrasts.
But what about the title (of the play) itself??? Charles Dickens had, as a contemporary critic put it, a "queer name" and the name Dickens was used in interjective exclamations like "What the Dickens!" as a substitute for "devil"...

About Me
- Teacher Alex
- Portugal
- I am from Coimbra, Portugal, and am currently teaching in a school in Soure, about 30 km away from Coimbra. I have been a teacher of English for over 20 years and have already taught different levels and age groups. After all this time I can say I love working with adult groups because there are no coursebooks and I can create my own resources. I am an avid reader, a blogger and very curious about free tools and their implementation in the classroom.

I´m sooooooo glad you liked it! It was your first time but some of the kids had already taken part in previuos plays and they also said they had had a really nice time. If you liked, then it was worth the effort!!!!

Hello, Alexandra!
It's always good to come to this space of yours and see what you've been up to.
Curiously, I was also thinking about bringing this play to my school, but was unsure about the price and whether it was appropriate for 7th-9th graders. Maybe you could give me some tips ;)
By the way, loved your Halloween card, thanks!!
Lena.
Hi, Lena!
This play is great (they always are!) and Interacting always sends a teacher's pack with suggestions and materials for each play.
They have some more performances planned for December, so perhaps you can start by visiting www.expolingua.pt and then getting in touch with them.
Each student pays 6 euros and I would say "What the Dickens?" is appropriate for your students'levels of English - but you can / should tell them that when planning the activity. Now, be sure you get around 150 students, Lena, otherwise it might be difficult to persuade them to go to the Algarve, ok?
Thank you so much for all the information. I really wanted to bring a play to my school, but getting 150 students to attend is a bit difficult in a small school like mine... Maybe with some cooperation from the other schools nearby, who knows? I'll try and then I'll let you know!
Love,
Lena.
The experience of the play must have been very interesting. As I could see from the positive feedbacks and the images you posted, it was a great fun for the students. The idea of involving them is great.
Yes, you effort was worthwile!!
Thank you so much for your active participation! Ya, I also believe it was worthwhile and for teachers in Portugal and Spain, Interacting has been a good "link": at least once a year, learners (no matter how old they are) can have much fun while learning English.
Helena: do try and take this theatre company to your school;
Sonia: try to find out if there's anything similar in Italy.
Hi, teacher! I didn't understand everything but with their movements I could understand what was going on. I had a lot of fun and the students on stage even more.
